GHAZIABAD: Thirty-five cops of Loni police station have been booked following a court order for allegedly framing a temple priest in a false case and arresting him in July last year.
On June 3, the court of the chief judicial magistrate had ordered the registration of an FIR against the cops under Section 156 (3) of the CrPC. The court was hearing a petition by Deepa Sharma, who alleged that her husband Monu Sharma, a priest at Siddhi Baba temple in Loni, was wrongly booked in a case and put behind bars in July last year. Monu is currently out on bail.
Among the 35 cops who were booked are Yogendra Pawar, a former SHO of Loni Border police station, four sub-inspectors — Vishnu Tomar, Malkhan Singh, Pradeep Sharma, Amarpal Singh — seven constables, and others.
Deepa said in her complaint that she and her husband lived on the temple premises and had recently gained popularity for distributing offerings among the poor and helping underprivileged girls get married. She alleged that some people in the neighbourhood had started to envy them because of their growing popularity.

“There were three men in particular – Manish Bhati, Balli and Vikas – who would pick up fights with my husband. Once, they asked for Rs 2 lakh and threatened us with dire consequences if we did not pay the money,” she alleged.
On July 6 last year, Monu was busy with a wedding ritual when the three allegedly reached there with a police team. Deepa told the court that the three beat up her husband in front of the cops. Around 9.30 that night, Yogendra Pawar, the SHO of Loni police station, and more than 30 other cops allegedly barged into Monu’s house in the temple compound and thrashed the couple.
“They dragged Monu to the local check-post and tortured him. They also snatched two gold rings, two silver rings from my husband. The police personnel visited my house again at 2.30am and dragged me to the police station,” the FIR said.
The cops were booked under sections 147 (rioting), 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 452 (house trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.
The police had earlier said that Monu and five others had beaten up a person named Himanshu Sharma. The next day, he and a few others also blocked a road in Loni Border. He was eventually arrested along with 10 others, the police had said.
